Place the walnut hulls in a warm dry area. Keep the drying hulls out of direct sunlight. Allow the hulls to dry completely; they will turn black when they are completely dry. The average drying time is 2 to 3 weeks but if you live in a humid climate it may take longer.

Freshly-picked walnuts must be dried at two stages. The first is after you remove the green hulls, when the walnuts are still in their shells. Then, once you shell the nuts, the meat inside should be dried for a few more days before you process or store it.
